  1. I love blackpink! I was having a conversation about kpop with my music business professor who is american and white. She and I discussed and made predictions as to whether or not Blackpink was going to ‘make it’ here in America. And, I feel that according to the all the media hype they received from coachella, it’s safe to say that blackpink has in fact had a break through. I think they’re now more successful than bts. that obviously depends on how you define ‘success’. but in my opinion, blackpink has gotten more attention from mainstream american media and celebrities and the music industry as a whole, and they aren’t simply being acknowledged but i feel as though these americans actually LIKE blackpink. i feel that bts was oftentimes ‘othered’ and sort of still seen as a kpop band that came from a subculture, but blackpink has seemingly penetrated the american market without that sense of othering. i think it has to do with a combination of factors, such as being able to speak english, having a smaller number of people in the group, being attractive, but more importantly, their music and style is a hybridity of both korean and american. their music, produced by korean american producer Teddy, has successfully included both korean and american elements of music and lyrics into production that the reception in america has so far only been positive. i’m excited to see how their success continues to unfold.
